La Perfumerie: A range of chemical-free, alluring fragrances

30 Sep 2021

Perfume is the art that makes memory speak; or so it is said. La Perfumerie Founder Shifan Najumudeen took this to heart when he began his business two years ago, in October. Although he launched with very few facilities and resources, today his business is about to celebrate two years of success. Previously, Najumudeen worked in the Middle East for over 10 years. During his time there, he acquired a wealth of knowledge on how perfumes were manufactured, as well as the art of producing them. Upon his return to Sri Lanka, he was driven by the passion to begin his own perfume brand while applying all the skills he had learned over his extensive stay in the Middle East.  His time abroad had also given him access to certain products that are essential for perfume making, and was able to easily import them to Sri Lanka with the help of his friends and contacts in the Middle East.  With the potential to sell between 350 and 400 bottles of perfume a month in the very early days of the company, he soon came to understand that he can grow the business further. Accordingly, he is working to bring his products to the masses through social media platforms which have now become the ideal ways for businesses to market their products given the current times.  La Perfumerie is not just your ordinary perfume; what really takes his brand to the next level is the fact that all his products are chemical free. In conversation with Najumudeen on the manufacturing process behind his products, he explained: “Our products are organic, essential oil-based, chemical-free perfumes that are specifically created and designed for our climate.”  He further informed us that oil-based perfumes are perfect for tropical countries, as they blend well with the heat and sweat produced by our bodies. “They work much better than the conventional perfumes on the market that are chemical and alcohol based.” This also ensures that the products are harmless and will not irritate the skin in any way.  These perfumes, as they are essential oil-based, are also made to last longer than most perfumes; which was actually a delightful fact to hear, as most of us can relate to the smell of perfume just disappearing in mere seconds sometimes. He guaranteed that their products would last at least 12-15 hours.  Talking about their products itself, Najumudeen commented that almost all their perfumes are inspired by various perfumer brands as in this industry, most customers look for a particular brand, as that is what they are used to. They recreate these popular fragrances that are in demand, except instead of using harmful chemicals, they opt for gentle essential oils. Currently, they have a range close to 75 perfumes.  This, according to Najumudeen, was actually a big challenge that he had to overcome as most people were used to the conventional perfumes; Najumudeen worked hard to convert customers to his brand, but eventually, through word of mouth and a stellar product, he now has a very loyal customer base.  For the past three months, Najumudeen noted that their bestseller was actually one of their own blends. “It’s called White Oak, and it’s blended with special ingredients, both imported and local. Whoever tries it even once, always comes back to repurchase it as it blends well and lasts long.” He promised that even after your clothes are washed, the fragrance will linger. They have four new blends coming out this year, three of which will be their own, unique blend. He also informed us that they are working on a special project as a little surprise for their customers. “This will be a unique, never-before-seen product that they will not be able to purchase anywhere else, so look forward to it!”  La Perfumerie is on its way to establishing itself as a globally renowned brand that appeases the olfactory senses while projecting the unique identity of fragrances native to Sri Lanka.  Instagram: @laperfumerie.lk Facebook: La.Perfumerie.lk by the beach Google Maps: https://maps.app.goo.gl/21RbFWE7BY1BRmjQ8
