Employees reporting to work are facing many hardships due to a lack of proper public transport, The Morning learnt.
Inter-company Employees’ Union (ICEU) President Wasantha Samarasinghe, speaking to The Morning, said that
neither buses nor trains were available.
“A lot of people are getting stranded as there is a lack of buses for people to travel in. There aren’t enough buses to
go even to the train station,” he said, pointing out that more commuters had to use trains at this time as it was the
only method of transport through which district lines can be crossed under lockdown regulations.
Samarasinghe also said that there was a shortage of trains.
“The least the Government could have done was to ensure that proper public transport was available if they were
going to reopen the economy. There aren’t enough trains running and as a result people living outstation and in rural areas cannot commute to work on time or at all in some cases,” he said, adding that this could lead to additional people losing jobs.
Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) Chairman Kingsley Ranawaka said that the Government was supplying buses solely for the purpose of transporting commuters to train stations.
“We have co-ordinated with the railway service and found out how many commuters come to each station each day
and have organised the required number of buses to transport people to the stations,” he said.
He went on to say that there were ample trains for commuters.
