Lawyers protest AG’s withdrawal of politicos’ cases

  • Stage protest outside AG’s Department
  • AG’s Dept. requests protesters to submit written request
A protest was held by a large number of lawyers yesterday (5), outside the Attorney General’s (AG) Department, primarily demanding answers for the withdrawal of legal cases against politicians. “We were able to meet an official representing the AG. We asked him on what basis all these cases were withdrawn. We were told to submit a written request and we will do so soon,” the Lawyers’ Forum for the People Convener and Attorney Senaka Perera told The Morning yesterday, following the protest. Many prominent cases were withdrawn by the AG, after 2019. Amongst them are the “Divi Neguma” case and the “Almanack” case, cases in which former Finance Minister Basil Rajapaksa was accused of embezzlement before being acquitted of all charges. Chants at the protest further urged the AG to listen to the demands of the public. Protests have become a common sight around the island in the past three months, as citizens’ calls for the supply of basic essentials such as fuel, electricity, food items, and gas have been increasing. Alongside this, the “#GoHomeGota” hashtag campaign has been popularised across social media. A state of emergency was declared over the weekend, followed by a curfew and a ban on social media applications, as dissent against the Government continues to grow.
