Lawyers to lodge complaint about re-victimisation of protestors

26 May 2022

BY Dinitha Rathnayake  The Lawyers’ Forum for the People plans to file a complaint with the National Authority for the Protection of Victims of Crime and Witnesses (NAPVCW) against the alleged re-victimising of victims of the attacks by Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) Government supporters on the protest sites of “MynaGoGama” in Kollupitiya and “GotaGoGama” at Galle Face. Speaking to The Morning, Co-Convenor of the Forum Attorney Senaka Perera said that the complaint would be filed under provisions of the Assistance to and Protection of Victims of Crime and Witnesses Act, No. 4 of 2015 as amended. Catholic priest Amila Jeewantha Peiris, who is an active member of the “GotaGoGama” protest and six other plaintiffs who supported the peaceful protest were banned from travelling abroad after the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) sought and obtained a Court order to ban foreign travel for them.  Peiris said: “Me and six other plaintiffs who supported the peaceful protest were banned from travelling abroad and were ordered to hand over our passports to the Colombo Fort Magistrate's Court immediately following an order issued in this regard.”  This order has been issued for the purposes of further investigations into the complaint lodged by Peiris and other parties regarding the attack on the Galle Face Green peaceful protest site on 9 May. “Clearly, this is intimidation to show what happens to those who challenge the Government and the politicians. We lodged our complaint against the Ministers who were involved in this attack but the CID has summoned us. This is a total violation of human rights and the first time ever to ban the foreign travel of victims”. He also said that the passports would be handed over to the Court today (27). Meanwhile, The Morning exclusively reported that protestors at the “GotaGoGama” sites in Minuwangoda and Kurunegala have alleged that attempts are being made to intimidate peaceful protestors on the instructions of Minister of Urban Development and Housing Prasanna Ranatunga, and former Minister and incumbent Government MP Johnston Fernando. Speaking to The Morning on 18 May, protestors at the “GotaGoGama” in Minuwangoda claimed that SLPP supporters are attempting to bait protestors at the site.
