Leadership row in TNA

09 Feb 2020

The leadership issue seen in the United National Party (UNP) seems to be creeping into the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) now. Moves to name Illankai Tamil Arasu Katchi (ITAK) Leader Mavai Senathirajah as the leader of the TNA to replace R. Sampanthan has faced some opposition from within. TNA alliance member, the Tamil Eelam Liberation Organisation (TELO), has opposed any move by ITAK to name a TNA leader without consulting all TNA members. TELO Leader Selvam Adaikalanathan has reminded ITAK that the TNA consists of three political parties and not just ITAK. Senior ITAK member C.V.K. Sivagnanam had said that Senathirajah is likely to be appointed as the new TNA leader. “That is Sivagnanam’s personal opinion. One single party in the TNA cannot decide who the TNA leader will be. That has to be a collective decision,” Adaikalanathan said. Sampanthan has led the TNA for several years and is expected to step down soon and make way for a new leader. – Easwaran Rutnam
