07 Jun 2020

The Department of Railways has incurred a loss of Rs. 47 billion over 25 years due to pending lease rent payments on the lands owned by the Department, The Sunday Morning learnt. Accordingly, a vast amount of land along with the railway line owned by the Department had been leased out and some lands have been encroached by illegal occupants, an official attached to the Ministry of Transport Services Management told The Sunday Morning. The Department had not received payments for several such lands for over 25 years, and the due amount is now estimated at Rs. 47 billion. However, Transport Services Management Minister Mahinda Amaraweera has given instructions to the Railways Department to conduct a survey on lands occupied by tenants and obtain the due amounts.
