Claiming that she has never been involved in politics for personal gain, Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) MP Pavithradevi Wanniarachchi, who is tipped to be appointed as Minister of Women, Child Affairs, and Social Empowerment, said that she is only engaged in politics for the sake of merit.
Speaking to the media, she said: “Time is what is most important to me. So I dedicate that time and my life to the people of the country. I decided to dedicate my life to the people and the country as much as possible and to fulfil their needs, both public and private. I engage in politics only for the sake of merit.”
It was recently reported that Wanniarachchi is to be granted the portfolio of Minister of Women, Child Affairs, and Social Empowerment, which was gazetted by President Gotabaya Rajapaksa last week.
She said that she had never used politics as an “ornament” and that she had never made any income out of politics, adding: “Am I engaged in politics to make money? Have I ever earned a cent through wrong means? Have I ever taken a commission or a bribe? No. I was born into a wealthy family and the money I get from the tea factories and gems we have is what I spend on elections to serve the people and the country.”
Wanniarachchi entered politics on the invitation of former Prime Minister Sirimavo Bandaranaike in 1990. In 1991, she was appointed as the Chief Organiser of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) for the Kalawana Electorate. She then became a Member of the Sabaragamuwa Provincial Council in 1993, and in 1994 she entered Parliament as an MP representing the Ratnapura District. Since then, she has held several portfolios, the latest of which was the Minister of Power. She held that portfolio until the Cabinet of Ministers resigned on 9 May, following the resignation of former Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa.
