Litro to release 180,000 cylinders amidst LPG shortage

With consumers, particularly in the Western Province, complaining of a severe liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) shortage in the market, Litro Gas Lanka Ltd. said yesterday (30) that it hopes to release 180,000 LPG cylinders to the market within the next few days. “The daily demand for LPG has increased significantly. During the next few days, we hope to release 180,000 cylinders to the market. Our supply and filling stations work around the clock these days to meet the demand and we hope to meet the demand without delay soon,” Litro Gas Lanka said in a statement issued in this regard yesterday. The LPG shortage has heavily affected consumers, with long lines seen outside outlets in several places in the Colombo District. Consumers have been forced to find alternatives, with some consumers telling The Morning this week that five pieces of firewood are sold at Rs. 25 in the market now. The media reported yesterday that prominent supermarkets are selling firewood bundles at prices ranging from Rs. 200 to Rs. 700 per bundle. “All cylinders which come to us for refilling purposes are carefully scrutinised. Cylinders are also sent for maintenance, and in order to prevent the delays that occur during this process, we have taken steps to import the necessary technical equipment as soon as possible,” the Litro Gas Lanka statement further said. Following Western Province Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police Deshabandu Tennakoon’s statement last week that over 800 domestic LPG cylinder-related incidents were reported this year, along with seven deaths and 16 injuries, the Presidential Expert Committee appointed to investigate the recent LPG-related explosions blamed the increase in the propane ratio for the explosions. Earlier this month, the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) ordered both Litro Gas Lanka and Laugfs Gas PLC to recall all sealed cylinders in the market distributed before 4 December. Earlier this week, Litro Gas Lanka also noted delays due to the time spent on recalling cylinders that were previously released to the market. Laugfs Gas PLC also issued a special notice to consumers yesterday, informing its consumers that it will accept all cylinders that were previously distributed at its designated distribution points and that it will reimburse the consumers based on the weight inside the cylinders when it is returned. The most immediate recommendations made by the Presidential Expert Committee were to keep the propane percentage at less than 30% and to increase the level of the odourant ethyl mercaptan in the cylinders so that a gas leak is more easily detectable. Therefore, Technology Ministry Secretary and the Co-ordinator of the Presidential Committee appointed to investigate LPG-related incidents Jayantha De Silva said that from the three ships carrying new stocks of LPG to Litro Gas Lanka last week, two were completely cleared for distribution whilst one has not been permitted to unload its stocks as the ethyl mercaptan odourant level in them does not meet the required standard.
