28 Apr 2021

The Cabinet of Ministers has decided to allocate Rs. 285 million as initial funds to implement a liver transplant unit at the Kelaniya University Medical Faculty. According to Co-Cabinet Spokesman and Mass Media Minister Keheliya Rambukwella, Cabinet approval has been granted to set up a state of the art liver transplant unit at the Colombo North Centre for Liver Diseases of the Kelaniya University Medical Faculty. The Minister highlighted that around 1,500 patients are on the annual waiting list for liver transplants, but only 10 liver transplants are performed annually due to the lack of infrastructure facilities. "Patients have to spend huge amounts for liver transplants done abroad. The country has a talented medical staff to perform liver transplants. So it is the responsibility of the government to improve infrastructure facilities to cater to this timely need," the Minister said.
