The Minister of Trade Bandula Gunawardena stated in Parliament today (23) that the government should pay attention to the importation of canned fish despite the country being an island.
The Minister was responding to a question raised by Parliamentarian Hesha Vithanage today (23) regarding the importation of substandard canned fish unfit for consumption.
The Minister said that several factories have been set up to import canned fish to Sri Lanka under the Mahinda Chinthana program, but due to the reduction of tariffs on canned fish by the previous government, the local canned fish market which was developed in the country was destroyed due to the large import of canned fish.
The Minister said that such tax cuts would incur huge losses in order to reap temporary benefits. The Minister said that canned fish is being imported to Sri Lanka from 33 countries including Chile and Thailand. The Consumer Affairs Authority is expected to take up the matter as soon as it receives a complaint regarding substandard products.Local canned fish market destroyed due to imports
