* Reds beat Blues in match no. 7 at SLC T20 League

Dinesh Chandimal-led Reds beat Blues, led by Dhananjaya de Silva, in the seventh match of the Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) Invitational T20 League on Wednesday (18) at Pallekele.

The next game last evening, played between Greys and Green, had been delayed due to bad weather when this edition went to press.

Blues 146/7 in 20 overs (Dhananjaya Lakshan 55 off 47, Lahiru Samarakoon 35 n.o., Nishan Madushka 25; Himesh Ramanayake 4/31, Chamika Karunaratne 2/37)

* Three Lankans to play in Online Asian Women’s Chess Championship

The players, Woman FIDE Master (WFM) Dinushki Premanath, Woman Candidate Master (WCM) Sanudula Dahamdi, and Woman International Master (WIM) Sachini Ranasinghe are named by the National Selection Committee of Chess to participate in the Online Asian Women’s Rapid Chess Championship 2021, to be held on 23 to 25 August at the Tornelo Platform.

They were the top three players at the Special Selection Tournament which was held for selecting the Sri Lanka national chess team recently.

The Online Asian Women’s Chess Championship is conducted by the Asian Chess Federation. It will have nine rounds in the Swiss System with a total of 70 players from 13 countries registering for the event.

* Crysbro sponsors Sri Lanka reps for World Junior Athletic and Wrestling Championship

A leading poultry production company Crysbro is sponsoring the three young athletes who are taking part in the World Junior Athletic Championship and the World Junior Wrestling Championship this week.

Taking part in the World Junior Athletic Championship are Tharushi Karunarathna and Ravindu Sithum Jayasundara. Nethmi Ahinsa Fernando will be representing Sri Lanka at the World Junior Wrestling Championship.

“Being recipients of ‘the National Olympic Committee of Sri Lanka (NOCSL)-CRYSBRO Next Champ Scholarship Programme’, this is a great recognition and feat for the management at Crysbro, proving the effectiveness and drive the programme offers to all scholarship holders,” a media communiqué by Crysbro said this week.

Crysbro, along with the NOCSL, launched ‘the NOCSL-CRYSBRO Next Champ Programme’ so as to identify and support 20 talented young athletes from Sri Lanka who are capable of bringing international recognition to the country.

“Achieving what they work so hard for is a feeling that spreads optimism among everyone involved in supporting these aspiring young athletes. We are more than elated and proud to witness three of our resilient athletes take part in these international events.
