Local Sports News in Brief - Vision Care sponsors Colombo C’ship for sixth year

The famous Colombo Championship Tennis Tournament, now being conducted for the 106th occasion at the Sri Lanka Tennis Association (SLTA) clay courts at Green Path, Colombo, is sponsored again by the premier eye care provider Vision Care Opticians. The other sponsors of the event are First Capital PLC and Red Bull. Bobalat is the official ball sponsor.

Vision Care Managing Director Janaka Fonseka said, “We are very happy to be involved with this prestigious tournament for the sixth year running. We believe sports is vital for the health of the nation and are strongly committed to supporting the Colombo Championships. The objectives of the tournament are in line with our corporate objectives and, as such, we wanted to be part of this wonderful event. We at Vision Care believe that tennis provides an opportunity for not only the youth but every age category to participate in an outdoor and healthy sporting activity. And we as a company are doing our bit by promoting good health through sports.”

* SLT-Momitel powers ‘SpeedUp Katukurunda 2021’

SLT-Mobitel has come forward to power one of the most anticipated automotive events in Sri Lanka, ‘SLT-MOBITEL SpeedUp Katukurunda 2021’. The event is set to take place on 4 and 5 December (Saturday and Sunday) at the Sri Lanka Air Force Katukurunda Circuit. Organised by the Sri Lanka Automobile Sports (SLAS) together with the support of all ten of its member clubs, this is the first time that the local motor racing governing body is organising an event at Katukurunda. The event will be streamed live via SLT-Mobitel official Youtube channel, its Facebook channels, and PEO TV.

* Entries called for Inter-School Esports C’ship 2021

Gamer.LK, a leader in e-sports and digital entertainment experiences in Sri Lanka, is to organise the fifth Inter-School Esports Championship for 2021, sponsored by Samsung Sri Lanka. It is considered one of the largest school-level sporting events in the country with 150 schools taking part in it last time. “E-sports athletes” from any govt. or international school can enter the following team games: Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, Call of Duty Mobile, Dota 2, Free Fire, League of Legends, Mobile Legends, PUBG Mobile, Rainbow Six Siege, and Valorant; and individual games such as Assetto Corsa eRacing, Clash Royale, FIFA 21, Real Cricket and Rocket League.

The Championship will also feature a Women’s League with Clash Royale, Dota 2, League of Legends, Mario Kart Tour, and Valorant in order to recognise the best schoolgirl e-sports athletes in Sri Lanka. Samsung, in partnership with Gamer.LK, has successfully initiated many large-scale gaming tournaments, amassing over 1,000 participants from around the country whilst a staggering 175,000 people watching the tournaments over live streams. Registrations for the Inter-School Esports Championship 2021 are now open online at https://school.gamer.lk and will close on 13 December.

* Dayan Dissanayake to officiate in Asian hockey event in Dhaka

Dayan Dissanayake from Matale has been selected by the Asian Hockey Federation (AHF) to officiate as an umpire in the Bangladesh Super League hockey tournament 2021, now in progress at the Maulana Hockey Stadium in Dhaka. The tournament sees participation of 12 teams comprising stickers from China, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Pakistan, and Singapore. A product of St. Thomas’ College, Matale, Dissanayake is the 12th Sri Lanka hockey umpire to officiate in a leading FIH event. (By L.D. Chandrasiri, our Matale sports correspondent)

* Red Bull gives “wiiings” to an age-old sport

“Red Bull Outriggd” returned for year 2021 bringing back the age-old tradition of outrigger canoeing to Sri Lanka after a two-year absence. All the action took place on 6 November at Port City, Colombo. This is the very first water sport event which took place on the beach promenade inside the Port City.
