Low-income allowance: Rs. 16 b loan approved for May

24 May 2020

The Cabinet of Ministers has approved the obtaining of a Rs. 16 billion short-term loan on behalf of the Samurdhi Department to pay the Rs. 5,000 allowance to low-income people affected by the outbreak of Covid-19. The Cabinet of Ministers said that it considered the fact that the Government had spent between Rs. 2.5 and 3billion in April to provide the Rs. 5,000 allowance to low-income people. The Government expects to provide 5,144,446 persons with the allowance in May 2020. Accordingly, Rs. 25.72 billion will be spent in the month May for this purpose. Co-Cabinet Spokesman Dr. Bandula Gunawardana told The Sunday Morning that the decision to obtain a short-term loan was taken as the Samurdhi Fund was not sufficient to pay the Rs. 5,000 allowance for May. He reiterated that the Rs. 5,000 allowance was disbursed in a very transparent manner among needy persons.
