Lunch sheets banned from 01 August

28 Jul 2021

The Ministry of Environment says that the production, sale and use of non-perishable "lunch sheets" made of polythene will be banned from August 1. Minister of Environment Mahinda Amaraweera stated this at a media briefing held in Colombo. "There is no need to issue a special gazette notification in this regard," the Minister said. Although a gazette notification was issued in 2017 regarding the ban on non-perishable lunch sheets made of polythene, the ban has not been formally implemented, the Minister said. The Minister said that non-perishable lunch sheets or biological lunch sheets cause great damage to the environment and add up to 12-15 million lunch sheets to the environment of our country daily. About 1 percent of lunch sheets used by humans are not recycled and more than 99 percent are thrown into the environment, the minister said. The Minister has also instructed the Central Environmental Authority to launch raids from August 1 to find out whether non-perishable lunch sheets are being used.
