Who is the best person to take up the hot seat of the Chairman, National Cricket Selection Committee?
The opinions might vary but according to outgoing Head of the Committee Ashantha de Mel, it is none other than former Sri Lanka Captain, remarkable batsman, and the current Mumbai Indian Coach Mahela Jayawardene is the right choice.
“I think it is Mahela Jayawardene. He is the one who is in the National Sports Council (NSC) now. He can serve well for the development of cricket. If he says that the game needs to be rectified, he can come and do it,” said de Mel in a recent online interview.
“He (Jayawardene) is now coaching the Mumbai Indians (in the Indian Premier League or IPL). Now he has the possibility to pick the Sri Lanka team which he thinks is the best. He should do it by committing time by himself,” de Mel added.
“Then we can see what changes he will make, compared to the changes that we had made (during de Mel’s tenure). I think that’s the best thing,” de further said in this chat with journalist Danushka Aravinda.
“Mahela is current (up-to-date) with the game. He brought Mumbai Indians to the very top, to the number-one place. Is there anyone better than him?,” he asked. “Bring Sri Lanka also to the number-one position!”

De Mel further said that Jayawardene has a great eye to select players adding that he may have to do some commitment if he is to take up the position.
After the three-member National Selection Committee was disbanded following the resignation of de Mel last week, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) and the Ministry of Sports have announced they are going to appoint a new panel soon. Sri Lanka’s next assignment is coming up in the form of a long tour in the Caribbean this month.
“(But) in Sri Lanka, the problem is that we don’t pay like the way the Mumbai Indians could be paying,” also noted de Mel.
“The Chairman of the selectors is paid an amount close to about two to three lakhs per month here. There is nothing else. We need to go for the matches by our own vehicles etc. with that money,” he explained.
“I can’t say whether Mahela would commit such a big job (in India) and take up the post here. But if you ask me who is the most suitable person, that’s him,” de Mel reiterated.
