Former Sri Lanka captain Mahela Jayawardene has criticized the way the national cricket selectors have picked the four teams for the forthcoming domestic T20 tournament, named SLC T20 League, which Sri Lanka Cricket launched in a ceremony in Colombo Friday morning.
“Very tough to understand the policy... this is what happens when national selectors select provincial teams. That’s why you need provincial selectors on a different structure. You need experience (sic) players for the youngsters to learn,” former stalwart had tweeted Friday afternoon.
The tournament features four teams, Teams from Colombo, Dambulla, Galle and Kandy, led by veteran players, Dinesh Chandimal, Thisara Perera, Suranga Lakmal and Angelo Mathews respectively. Each team features 21 players including at least one Under-19 player. The present National Selection Committee comprises Graeme Labrooy (Chairman), Gamini Wickremasinghe, Eric Upashantha and Jerry Woutersz. Sri Lanka coach Chandika Hathurusingha is also a member of the committee but, according to SLC, he operates in that capacity only when the national team is on tour. The SLC T20 League will be staged in venues at Colombo, Dambulla and Kandy, from August 21 to September 2.
