Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) Minister Mahinda Amaraweera and State Minister Lasantha Alagiyawanna were last week in a difficult situation when a meeting of SLFP organisers turned out to be a heated exchange of words with angry organisers walking out of the meeting. A meeting of the SLFP’s Gampaha District local government members was dominated by several party organisers calling on the SLFP leaders to take action against the unfair treatment of the SLFP by the governing Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP). The organisers claimed that the SLFP was being cast aside and being pushed down by the SLPP and that the SLFP leaders were allowing it to happen. However, Amaraweera and Alagiyawanna, while agreeing that the SLFP had issues in the manner in which the SLPP was treating the party, stated that all matters will be discussed on Tuesday (27) when the SLFP leaders meet with President Gotabaya Rajapaksa. The SLFP has been disgruntled over the past few months over being sidelined by the SLPP in administrative issues as well as not being given what was agreed in the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the two parties in 2019. The SLFP leaders are currently facing pressure from its membership as well as from a majority of the members in the party’s Central Committee to stand against certain actions of the Government.
