Former President Maithripala Sirisena, commenting on the imminent change of the Governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL) has stated that, no matter what changes are made within the CBSL, the Governor of the CBSL and the Government must work together on economic decisions.
He further emphasised the importance of a collectively decided well-structured plan through which the economy of Sri Lanka can be revived.
The CBSL Governor Prof. W.D. Lakshman announced his retirement last Friday (10), effective today onwards (14).
Prof. W.D. Lakshman was the former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Colombo and has also served as an advisor to the Ministry of Finance, Chairman of the Presidential Commission on Taxation in Sri Lanka (2009), and head of the Institute of Policy Studies.
He was appointed as the 15th Governor of CBSL in December 2019, replacing the former CBSL Governor Dr. Indrajit Coomaraswamy.
During his retirement press briefing, Prof. W.D. Lakshman claimed he was offered a position at the IMF, which he had declined. He further revealed that he had intended to retire in October when he turned 80. But had decided to advance the date of his retirement due to several unpleasant incidents which had taken place over the last 10 days. Explaining further, Prof. W.D. Lakshman stated: “If you read the media reports, you can realise the reasons.”
Media reports and rumours were circulating throughout last week that Ajith Nivard Cabraal, a former Governor of the CBSL himself, would be taking over as the CBSL Governor. When The Morning Business inquired about the ongoing speculation on his stepping down as State Minister and taking up the Governor position, Minister Cabraal neither denied nor accepted the statement.
Yesterday (13), confirming said rumours, Ajith Nivard Cabraal stepped down as the State Minister of Money, Capital Market, and State Enterprise Reforms and resigned his parliamentary seat to take over CBSL as the Governor once again. He is expected to assume duties within this week.
