15 Apr 2020

A majority of the Sri Lankans stranded overseas have been repatriated, The Morning learnt. Secretary to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Ravinatha Aryasinha said that only a few remained to be brought down. “Most of them have returned and a few more are on the way,” Aryasinha said. Aryasinha said that the returnees would be subject to a mandatory 21-day quarantine procedure once brought back to Sri Lanka. Some 33 Sri Lankans were stranded abroad in international airports due to the global coronavirus pandemic. Last Thursday (9), the Cabinet of Ministers approved a proposal by Minister of Foreign Affairs Dinesh Gunawardena, to bring back the 33 Sri Lankans, which include students as well as officials of other industries. Co-Cabinet Spokesman Minister Dr. Ramesh Pathirana, addressing the post-Cabinet press briefing last week, said the 33 included five Sri Lankans in Oman, seven in Singapore, three in Dubai, two in Turkey, five in Egypt, and one each in Ethiopia, Malaysia, India, Portugal, and the Maldives. Speaking to The Morning, Sri Lanka Army Media Spokesman Brigadier Chandana Wickramasinghe said out of the 33 Sri Lankans brought down, 14 were in quarantine; nine of them had travelled on Singapore Airlines while five had travelled on Qatar Airways.
