Malinga to play as SLC T20 League gets underway

21 Aug 2018

All eyes will be on how former ace fast-bowler Lasith Malinga will fare in the T20 encounter between Team Kandy and Team Dambulla, to be played under lights as the second match of the opening day of the 2018 Sri Lanka Cricket T20 League, on Tuesday, August 21, at R. Premadasa International Stadium, Colombo. The tournament will get underway with the game between Galle and Colombo which is to begin at 2 p.m. on Tuesday. Malinga is playing for Team Kandy, led by Sri Lanka limited-over Captain Angelo Mathews. The game is to begin at 7 p.m. and SLC said on Monday that the public is given free access to all matches of the tournament. There are four participating teams in this tournament. Out of them, every team will meet each of the other three twice before the best two teams will reach the finals, to be played under lights at R. Premadasa on Sunday, September 2, starting at 7 p.m. Before the final, there will be three rounds consisting four games each, two of them under lights. The three rounds will be held in Colombo (at R. Premadasa), Dambulla (Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium) and Kandy (Pallekele International Stadium). It was only last week that Sri Lanka coach Chandika Hathurusingha said Malinga could still be considered for selection of the national side if he shows form in both bowling and fielding in the domestic structure. Malinga did not play any international cricket since September last year due to injury problems. With his unorthodox low-slung action Malinga has claimed 301 ODI wickets at an average of 28.92 but his career looked a spent force particularly since the 2015 World Cup. The fact that he continued to play in the Indian Premier League (IPL) for many years after retiring from Tests in 2011 caused some resentment among his fans as well as the administrators. Last May, the bowler skipped a local inter-provincial one-day tournament to honour his commitment as a bowling mentor of his IPL franchise, Mumbai Indians. The next ICC World Cup is to be held in England and Wales from 30 May 2019. Before that, Sri Lanka are to play in the Asia Cup in UAE and will also involve in bilateral ODI series against England, New Zealand and South Africa with the latter two series to be held away from home.
