Malwathu Oya Basin Project: 5-year project to be launched

07 Feb 2021

  • $ 3.34 m UNDP grant

  • Project to cover 4 districts

The Ministry of Environment is to launch a five-year project that would focus on the integrated management of forests, agriculture, and tourism in the Malwathu Oya Basin area through a community-based ecosystem-oriented approach, The Sunday Morning learnt. “Through this project, we are looking to restore the ecological balance that was broken down over the years due to non-eco-friendly development work that has taken place in the region. Various programmes are currently implemented by the Government to control this situation. At the same time, we have identified the need for a long-term plan that needs to be carried out jointly in the fields of agriculture, tourism, and forestry,” Minister of Environment Mahinda Amaraweera told The Sunday Morning. The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), under its Global Environment Facility (GEF) Trust Fund, has agreed to allot a $ 3.34 million grant towards the implementation of this pilot project which will cover the Anuradhapura, Mannar, Vavuniya, and Puttalam Districts. The Cabinet of Ministers has granted approval to commence the project, which is scheduled to take place during the 2021-2024 period using the grant monies allotted by the UNDP.
