The Mount Lavinia Police on Tuesday (8) arrested a 35-year-old male suspect in connection with the trafficking of a 15-year-old girl for the purpose of sex. “Investigations revealed that the perpetrator has published various advertisements on social media and sold the girl to third parties on a daily basis, over a period of three months, for money,” said Police Media Spokesman Deputy Inspector General of Police Ajith Rohana in a media statement yesterday. This incident had occurred at a flat situated in the Mt. Lavinia area, and the arrest was made based on a tip off received by the Mount Lavinia Police OIC. It is reported that the arrested person had posted photos of the girl on the internet to advertise her. After being produced before the Moratuwa Magistrate’s Court on 8 June, the suspect was further remanded. The girl, a resident of Delgoda, had been taken from her mother and used for this purpose, the police spokesman said, adding that statements are being recorded from the girl’s mother. Rohana also said that further investigations are being conducted to trace the persons who paid money to obtain sexual services from the girl. The Penal Code as amended, the Obscene Publications Ordinance as amended, the Children and Young Persons (Harmful Publications) Act as amended, the Children and Young Persons Ordinance as amended, and the Employment of Women, Young Persons, and Children Law as amended are a part of Sri Lanka’s domestic legal framework for the protection of children. Child prostitution and sexual exploitation is an offence under Section 360 A of the Penal Code.
