  • Ministry of Health requests urgent vaccination
By Buddhika Samaraweera Pointing out that there are many individuals under the age of 30 years at risk of developing serious complications following being infected with Covid-19, the Ministry of Health has urged persons in this age group to obtain Covid-19 vaccines as soon as possible.  There were recent reports that certain individuals, particularly those between the ages of 20 and 30 years, have been reluctant to undergo vaccination. However, speaking at a media briefing held yesterday (21), Ministry of Health Communications Director, Public Health Services Deputy Director General (DDG), and Disaster Preparedness and Response Division Head Dr. Hemantha Herath said that there is no data as of present to confirm whether any of the Covid-19 vaccines currently being administered provide higher levels of protection over other vaccines. “In the current situation, all Covid-19 vaccines provide the same level of protection. So far no data is available to say that a particular vaccine provides superior protection over others,” he added. Dr. Herath also added that people under the age of 30 years should obtain the Covid-19 vaccines immediately, as they may also develop serious complications if they contract Covid-19. “There are a large number of people who can have serious complications, even among those under the age of 30 years. Also, a large number of deaths have been reported; therefore, obtain the Covid-19 vaccines immediately,” he urged. Meanwhile, claiming that youth in certain areas are reluctant to obtain the Covid-19 vaccines due to a rumour currently spreading on social media platforms that the receipt of such vaccines would result in impotence and sub-fertility, State Minister of Production, Supply, and Regulation of Pharmaceuticals Prof. Channa Jayasumana recently said that there was no truth in such claims. He said that a decrease in the number of young people receiving Covid-19 vaccines was observed in certain areas. One of the reasons for this, he said, was a widespread perception on social media platforms that the Covid-19 vaccines cause impotence and sub-fertility. “In some areas, young people are reluctant to obtain vaccines. One reason for this is the misconception that Covid-19 vaccines cause impotence and sub-fertility. Accordingly, we looked into this, and no such thing has been reported in the world so far. There is no truth in such claims,” he added.
