March madness ends with a bang: Revellers assault cop

By The Sunday Morning News Desk

A police constable attached to the Cinnamon Gardens Police Station was attacked last evening by “Big Match” revellers of a leading school in Colombo, and is currently being treated for severe head and chest injuries at the Colombo National Hospital, The Sunday Morning learnt.

The altercation had taken place at the conclusion of the 141st Battle of the Blues between Royal College, Colombo and S. Thomas’ College, Mt. Lavinia held at the Sinhalese Sports Club (SSC) Ground.

The assault on the police constable (PC) had taken place during a fight that had broken out between two groups of Royal College fans opposite the Perera & Sons outlet outside SSC.

When the constable, now identified as PC Janith (92453), had intervened to break up the two groups, he had been attacked by one of the groups.

One person had hit him on the chest with such force that he had been pelted back onto a car behind him before collapsing onto the ground.

At the time of going to print last night, the constable was being checked for head and chest injuries.

When The Sunday Morning contacted Cinnamon Gardens Police OIC Saranath Samarakoon last evening for a comment on the incident, he confirmed it and asked the newspaper to speak to the Police Spokesperson for further comment.

Police Spokesperson SP Jaliya Senaratne confirmed to The Sunday Morning that the injured PC was being treated at the Colombo National Hospital.

He further said that the Cinnamon Gardens Police had taken into custody one individual identified as the assailant and that he was being submitted for a medical examination last night.
