Mastering Mediocrity: Big Brain Time

13 May 2021

The 14th episode of Mastering Mediocrity premiered on 7 May 2021, featuring JumpBook.lk Founder Nishan de Silva. Here are a few of our favorite moments from this episode of Mastering Mediocrity.   Entrepreneurship vs the traditional nine-to-five workload Approximately 120 years ago, employees worked 12-hour shifts per day on average, and that was only until Henry Ford came into the picture and changed the entire game. However, at present, the nine-to-five work shift has become the norm. Unfortunately, even these standard working hours do not guarantee efficiency, productivity, or even employee contentment. With price levels rising on a daily basis, people are now resorting to side hustles in addition to their daily jobs. This is mainly due to the increase in cost of living and also unsatisfactory daily work lives. Even though technology and machinery have replaced much of human labour, people still need to work the same hours, which in turn makes them burn out and become frustrated.  It is also vital that people focus on turning their passion into their professions, because unless you love what you do, it is never going to bring any sorts of benefit into your life in the long run. Although monetary remunerations seem to be attractive at the time, towards the end of the day, self-satisfaction is needed for a more peaceful life. In this episode, Nishan and Zeeshan discussed what it is like to keep working their daily job while growing their small business until it booms. They also conversed about the fact that although many individuals aspire to be entrepreneurs, there are still some who are satisfied with the conventional work times, since being an entrepreneur doesn’t have a specific time frame and sometimes needs much more work and energy put into it than a regular job.    The fruits of self-discipline and personal finance For any workaholic, self-discipline is a must-have virtue in terms of punctuality, respect, and most importantly, getting your work done. It is crucial that you know your work in and out and thereby prioritise your tasks accordingly. Self-discipline helps you to keep your mindset clear and fully focused on your goals and has also proven to eliminate laziness, addictions to non-productive activities, and procrastination – man’s biggest enemy. On the other hand, working on a schedule isn’t for everyone. While functioning according to a time table may be “the way” of reaching your goals, for some others, being spontaneous is the way to go. For them, it is all about being in the right mindset to put in some hard work rather than pushing themselves into working during a specific time period. Mind you, both methods work – but the important thing is to know what method works for you best.  Today, this world we live in revolves around money and there sure is nothing you cannot buy with a few bucks in hand. But the real question is how well do we handle the money in our hands? Life always does get better with money but Nishan believes that it could get even better in the long run if we learn the art of investing and saving. It isn’t about how much you save, but rather how you can multiply this amount in the next few years. Owning a credit card is a nightmare for many individuals, especially for the younger generation. But when one learns to use it in an efficient and useful manner, you can always escape the horrors of it. Nishan spoke about how he uses his credit card for the most important payments and also makes sure that he settles his dues before the deadline. Being in credit card debt is a nightmare for many, and that is exactly where self-discipline comes into play. It certainly does not happen overnight, but a little bit of self-control and punctuality is all one needs in order to master this aspect of personal finance, even mediocrely.   Episode transcribed by Amani Najumudeen Watch episode 14 in its entirety here: https://youtu.be/FXYOchPLV5M Listen/Watch the episode on YouTube, Spotify, Google and Apple Podcast and don't forget to subscribe! http://bit.ly/3p14Wpd
