01 Sep 2022

By Ranjika Perera    Matara City extended the lead at the top with a convincing 2-0 win over New Star SC in the Champions League 2022 organised by Football Federation (FFSL) in Sri Lanka.  Week-11 games in the Champions League 2022 worked off last weekend. As the tournament enters the closing rounds, Matara City are slowly running ahead of the pack with their 10th win of the season, beating New Star SC by two goals to nil. Boadu Prince scored the first goal for Matara in the first half while Rehan Weerappuli scored the second late in the game.  Second-placed Java Lane suffered a major setback in the tournament after getting beaten 3-1 by Pelicans SC. Skipper Naveen Jude opened the scores in the first half for Java Lane. Little did they know that it would be the only time they would lead in the game as the Pelicans dominated proceedings. Nafshan Mohommad opened the scoring for the Pelicans in the first half. Lahiru Sampath added the second just before the break, while Mohommad scored his brace late in the game.  With Java Lane’s defeat, Matara City extended their points tally to 31 points while Java Lane remained at 26 in second place. Serendib SC are placed third with 23 points having lost only two games this season. Solid SC is yet to win a game this season as they remain at the bottom of the table.
