He was an amazing personality with a lot of style. I first saw him play his stylish forehand at the then Ceylon Lawn Tennis Association (CLTA) back in 1975.

He took a special interest in Royal College tennis as its Coach besides enjoying his doubles with “uncle Chandi” then. With his advice and guidance, I was fortunate to play in the Royal tennis team.

I clearly remember him (George) adjusting my blazer just before the college group photograph. Such a meticulous person who is always spoken about in high esteem!

Then came the point when his son Maitri Chandrasoma moved to USA and I was looking for a job. He kindly offered to drive me in his “UMC Mazda” to Colombo Fort and met one Devaka, his friend.

This was next to the then famous shop “Sportsman”. Mr. Rodrigo was seated in his Pagoda-office and loudly asked me, “young man what can I do for you”.

In my humble voice, I said, “sir, could you please be a reference for a job”. Uncle George kept watching every move. Then he took me to another person down Inner Flower Road.

He had planned everything as my second reference. Believe me when I applied to Harrison, the two referrals itself got me the job without batting an eye lid.

I continued to enjoy talking to him and aunty Seetha whom he much loved. I still consider myself fortunate to have known uncle George and may his great legacy live long!

RIP Uncle George!
