May sees hike in suspected dengue cases islandwide

BY Dinitha Rathnayake From 16 May 2022 to 22 May 2022, the total number of suspected dengue cases reported in 24 districts was 1,576 in comparison to the 1,294 cases reported from 24 districts during the previous week, showing a hike in suspected cases within the month of May. There is a 21.8% increase in the week from 16 May to 22 May, compared to the previous week. Of all reported cases, 46.8% were reported from the Western Province (WP) including 6.8% from the Colombo Municipal Council area, 19.1% from the rest of the Colombo District, 10.9% from the Gampaha District, and 10% from the Kalutara District. The Ratnapura (7.6%), Kandy (7.2%), Jaffna (6.2%), and Galle (6%) districts have also reported a higher number of cases. A total of 82 Medical Officer of Health (MOH) areas were flagged as high-risk areas during the week from 16 May to 22 May. Out of them, 33 MOH areas showed a rising number of cases in that week compared to the previous week, while another 48 MOH areas showed a persistently high number of cases in both the weeks. In the week from 16 May to 22 May, the risk level of the Baddegama, Balapitiya, Habaraduwa, Weligama, Kinniya, Kuchchaveli, Vavunatheevu, Oddamavadi, Alayadivembu, Sainthamaruthu and Mawanella MOH areas had come down, while the Kolonnawa, Dompe, Seeduwa, Wadduwa, Akurana, Kundasale, Poojapitiya, Udunuwara, Yatinuwara, Kopay, Tellippalai, Uduvil, Chankanai, Sandilipay, Nikaweratiya, Wennappuwa, Embilipitiya, Godakawela, Udawalawa, Deraniyagala, Kegalle, Ruwanwella, Akkaraipattu, Kalmunai South, and Addalaichenai MOH areas were newly identified as high-risk areas. The average midnight total of dengue patients in 69 selected hospitals throughout the country was 505 and 551 during week from 16 May and 22 May, and the one preceding it, respectively. In 15 hospitals, the average midnight total had decreased in the week from 16 May to 22 May when compared with the previous week.
