Mayor of the Jaffna Municipal Council Vishwalingam Maniwannan has been arrested. Police Media Spokesman, DIG Ajith Rohana stated that he was arrested for using five persons in uniforms similar to those used by LTTE police officers during the war, to assist in the promotion of the organization in the vicinity of Jaffna. Further investigations into the incident have revealed that the suspects had been deployed by the Municipal Council. It has been revealed that while recording the statements of several witnesses including the Municipal Commissioner of the Jaffna Municipal Council, the relevant persons have been temporarily recruited to the Municipal Council and a uniform has been designed and employed by the Mayor. The arrested mayor is due to be handed over to the Terrorism Investigation Division this morning (09). Five uniforms belonging to the unit have been taken into custody of the Jaffna Police yesterday (08) due similarities in resemblance with the LTTE police uniform. According to the Jaffna Mayor Visvalingam Manivannan, the unit was set up to take action against those who pollute the streets of Jaffna. He also added that the unit ensures that people follow relevant health precautions which are currently in force.
