MCC compact still being reviewed

06 Sep 2020

By Skandha Gunasekara The Attorney General’s (AG) Office is still in the process of reviewing the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) agreement. “There is no new information regarding the review process. We will inform of any significant developments,” Co-ordinating Officer to the AG Nishara Jayaratne SC told The Sunday Morning. Meanwhile, the Government acknowledged that while it had received a mandate to reject the MCC agreement, it is open to renegotiations. “If the Millennium Challenge Corporation is willing to negotiate changes to the compact, then we are open to it,” Cabinet Spokesperson and Minister of Mass Media Keheliya Rambukwella said. When queried as to why a review process was started after they received a mandate to desist from entering the agreement, the Minister said that it was the proper process to follow. “These are matters that have to be resolved through diplomatic channels and therefore, we must first review it thoroughly and posit the reasons for our disagreement to the compact,” Minister Rambukwella said.
