Medical professionals expresses concern over current issues since appointment of new Prez

10 Sep 2022

The Medical Professionals Sri Lanka for System Change have been involved in support of the people's struggle for system change in the past few months are very concerned and disheartened about recent developments which has lead to adverse consequences. This was made known via a media release by the The Medical Professionals Sri Lanka for System Change today (10). "The interim President, though totally rejected by the people less than three years earlier, was elected by the parliament according to the constitution but, as many believe, morally questionable. However, the people took a step back to give the newly installed president a reasonable chance for a course correction and improve their plight. As it turned out, the new president made it his top priority to use the police and other forces available to him, to apprehend the peaceful protesters and imprison them using the emergency powers as well as the much maligned Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA), a piece of draconian legislation vehemently condemned by international human rights," the statement read. The statement further noted that although the state of emergency has been lifted, purging of dissidents continue, over 3000 arrested so far, latest victims being a popular actress remanded for one week and student leaders incarcerated for up to three months or longer under the PTA. "Many imaginary allegations have been made against them. The President and his henchmen are going on a disgraceful campaign to condemn the peaceful protesters labeling them as fascists, drug addicts or those indulging in an insurrection to topple a democratically elected government. In the meantime, many government goons including parliamentarians and police officers, easily identified on video evidence as attackers of the peaceful protesters, have been enlarged on bail and are roaming freely dispensing their own brand of venom on the people," it further mentioned. Further, the statement mentioned that 'some ministers' who have been appointed to their positions were only done so as to join their 'notorius colleagues' who are already indicted for committing crimes. "Some have just been appointed as ministers to join their notorious colleagues already indicted for committing crimes or found guilty of various crimes and are on pending appeals. People had a ray of hope when the International Monetary Fund (IMF) appeared to have agreed to a relief package at staff level. Although not fully made public, one of the IMF recommendations is supposed to be to cut down government expenditure drastically. Thus people were taken by surprise and much dismay when the President went ahead appointing at least thirty-seven new State Ministers," it mentioned, noting that such appointments would only cost the state and people billions. The statement went on to mentioned that as a result, all the corrupt lawmakers responsible for making the country bankrupt in the first place are now firmly re-established in the saddles of power, and that they had no delusions of being of any use to relieve the burden on the suffering masses. "With important decisive discussions scheduled to take place shortly at the UN Human Rights Council, and with repeated warnings by the international community against suppression of the fundamental right of free expression peacefully, one is at loss to comprehend this irrational behavior of our rulers. If the government continues to tread this perilous path, masses will return to the streets in protest with unimaginable repercussions," the statement added. Furthermore, the statement noted that the Central Bank Governor had warned only a few days ago that there will be much unrest unless drastic action is taken by the authorities to relieve the suffering of the people with impending starvation. The statement concluded by appealing to President Ranil Wickremesinghe and the Government to to rethink their strategy and do their utmost to give relief to the suffering masses. "We demand that they stop forthwith the continuing arrests and incarceration of peaceful activists under the guise of imaginary charges. We urge the civil society groups, other organizations and the general public to strengthen their resolve and protest with all peaceful means available to them, not allowing the authorities to continue business as usual. After all a system change in governance was our original aim and remains the ultimate goal of this historic struggle," the statement concluded.
