Mel Lankans laud MP Wood

01 Sep 2019

By Vernon Tissera in Melbourne Jason Wood was re-elected this year as MP of the Australian House of Representatives for the Division of La Trobe, one of the electoral divisions in the state of Victoria located in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne. Being a politician always striving towards the fostering of multiculturalism in this vivid society, Wood has been famous among all communities, particularly the Sri Lankans living here in Australia. One would wonder to find out that Wood was formerly a police officer serving as a senior sergeant with the Victoria Police counter-terrorism unit. When he was previously in office as MP for La Trobe from 2004 to 2010, he was a vociferous activist on environmental issues and, in fact, was serving in the Standing Committee on Environment and Heritage. He won his seat back in the 2013 federal election. MP Wood’s relations with the Lankan community in Victoria are phenomenal. This was evident particularly when Scott Morrison, the present Prime Minister of Australia, recently visited the Sakyamuni Sambuddha Vihara built by the famous Ven. Gangodawila Soma Thera in Berwick, Melbourne. This writer remembers how the Premier took trouble in autographing our souvenirs that day quite humbly, on the request of our MP. A financial donation was given to build extra classrooms in the temple for the students of the Sinhala language. “This is to nourish your mother tongue,” Jason Wood said that day. His sincere effort to create a bridge among communities here and accept foreign communities into their fold is truly remarkable. Wood’s services do not limit to the Lankans. His electoral victory was owing to his genuine services to the Indians, Africans, Sudanese, and Afghan immigrants living here in thousands. But his “first love” is apparently the Lankans, which is why Wood always says he “loves the Sri Lankan fish curry like no other”. Enhancing multicultural relations led Premier Morrison to appoint Jason Wood as the Assistant Minister for Customs, Community Safety, and Multicultural Affairs. Wood and his Hong Kong wife Judy Cheung would like their only daughter to learn many Asian languages in the future – a sign of their desire to see a world complete with unity and equality amidst its resounding diversity.
