Memorial stone brought to Mullivaikkal ‘disappears’

14 May 2021

  • Brought for 18 May memorial for the war-dead

  • Army involvement alleged; Army denies

By Pamodi Waravita   A memorial stone that was brought to Mullivaikkal by the North East Mullivaikkal Memorial Forum on 18 May has allegedly disappeared yesterday (13) morning. The memorial stone was brought in preparation for the remembrance of the victims during the last stages of the Sri Lankan civil war in 2009. “We brought the memorial stone to the site in Mullivaikkal on the night of 12 May. We were stopped from placing it by officials from the Police and the Army. When we arrived there in the morning the next day (yesterday), the stone had disappeared. People allege that the Army moved it,” claimed North East Mullivaikkal Memorial Forum Co-Chair Fr. Leo Armstrong. Fr. Armstrong said the memorial stone was organised in remembrance of the 12th anniversary of the victims who died due to the civil conflict in 2009. Meanwhile, Army Director of Media Brig. Nilantha Premaratne denied the claim that the Army had been involved in the incident at all. When queried as to whether an investigation would take place regarding the matter, Brig. Premaratne observed that it would not be necessary since the Army was not involved in the incident. All attempts to contact Police Media Spokesman DIG Ajith Rohana proved futile. Fr. Armstrong also requested the people of the area to engage in the memorial. “We are also asking the public to hold a memorial at their houses, churches, and common places. We ask the religious leaders to ring their bells at 6 a.m., following which to observe two minutes of silence and to then light a lamp or a candle. We also ask the public to prepare Mullivaikkal rice (rice cooked in water), the food the people had to eat back then in 2009,” said Fr. Armstrong. He added that a complaint has been filed with the Mullaitivu Police Station regarding the disappearance of the memorial stone. The date of 18 May marks a day of remembrance around the country, as the nearly three-decade-long civil conflict was brought to an end on 18 May 2009.
