Focusing on mental health in the early years of a child is of paramount importance to their development and therefore emotional well-being is to be considered as a subject within school classrooms and universities, Education Minister Professor G L Pieris said today. "We need to identify symptoms of mental issues in children before it is too late. We need to teach children to discipline their mind and be emotionally healthy," he said. He stated that, internationally, transcendental meditation is taken extremely seriously, due to the large amount of underage deaths caused due to stress. Therefore, he stated that emotional and mental well-being is to be considered as a subject in schools and universities. The Minister expressed these views while participating in a ceremony held at the Ministry of Education today (03) to introduce the weekly school program to the school curriculum under the new education reforms based on a concept of the Venerable Udairiyagama Dhammavijaya Thero.
