Migrant worker job losses : Report due tomorrow

08 Nov 2020

By Sarah Hannan    The Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE) will publish its report on the number of job losses that was compiled using data gathered via its online survey form tomorrow (9).  Speaking to The Sunday Morning, SLBFE Deputy General Manager and Media Spokesperson Mangala Randeniya said: “The survey was kept open for migrant workers to enter their details on their employment status after Covid-19 impacted their countries of work. We are looking to publish the report for the past seven months on Monday evening (tomorrow), once our staff returns to office after the quarantine curfew is relaxed.” While several groups of people had returned to Sri Lanka due to the dangers posed by the Covid-19 pandemic in their migrant countries, most have now returned to their countries of employment.  However, there are several thousand who lost their jobs and/or had ended their contracts and are unable to secure new job contracts due to the present global economic condition.
