Military personnel move out of schools: All schools disinfected and returned

23 Jun 2020

Sri Lanka Army has disinfected and handed over all school buildings used as additional military camps due to the influx of personnel in existing military bases, Military Spokesman Brig. Chandana Wickramasinghe told The Morning. As of now, all school buildings have been handed over to the schools and all military personnel have reported to their respective camps, he added. Secretary to the Ministry of Education N.H.M Chithrananda told The Morning that the school buildings were not used as quarantine facilities, adding that the school buildings however have been disinfected by the Army after using them as per the health guidelines. When asked about the schools other than those used by the Army, Chithrananda said the necessary cleaning arrangements had already taken place in respective schools. With the approval of the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Defence in April has directed the tri-forces’ commanders to accommodate some of the soldiers, sailors, and airmen in selected schools as their own camps lacked the required space to accommodate them hygienically while maintaining the social distance which was mandatory to contain the spread of the novel coronavirus. – Maheesha Mudugamuwa
