President Gotabaya Rajapaksa today said that the ministerial positions assigned to parliamentarians in the new government were responsibilities and not privileges.
Rajapaksa expressed these views following the swearing-in ceremony of the 35 State Ministers and 3 Deputy Ministers at the Presidential Secretariat.
Rajapaksa said the number of portfolios increased more than planned due to the number of promises in the manifesto.
"We are unable to grant ministerial positions to everyone who assisted us politically and gained us votes, especially considering the limitations in the constitution," Rajapaksa pointed out.
He said many State ministries such as Indigenous Medicine, Social Services, Technology and Tourism Promotion were assigned due to its significance to the country.
He further advised Ministers to provide necessary support to Deputy Ministers and State Ministers to carry on their responsibilities.
