Ministry of Mass Media appoints Operational Committee to establish Chartered Institute of Journalists in Sri Lanka

The Ministry of Mass Media has appointed an Operational Committee to establish the cabinet approved Chartered Institute of Journalists in Sri Lanka. This was made known via a media release from the Ministry of Mass Media recently. The Cabinet Ministers appointed this committee as a resolution moving forward to bring Journalism in Sri Lanka to an international standard with Graduate and Post Graduate level study opportunities in the subject of Journalism and Mass Media. The Cabinet approved a proposal for the establishment of a Mass Media Higher Education, Research and Training Institute in Sri Lanka on the 5th of October 2021, where Minister of Mass Media and Cabinet spokesperson Dullas Alahapperuma stated that the purpose of the institute is to provide practical training to journalists, media managers who are already working in the field of journalism, as well as school children who aspire to enter the field of journalism, and to develop their capabilities, enhance their professionalism, and create a media culture with ethical autonomy. The Operational committee members include Secretary to the Ministry of Mass Media Jagath P. Wijeweera, Additional Secretary to the Ministry of Mass Media H Hewage, Additional Director General of the Government Information Department Milinda Rajapaksa, Ms Ureka Welarathna, Prof. Wijayananda Rupasinghe, Prof. Madubashini Galagedara, Prof Wijayantha Ukwatta, Prof Ranga Kalansooriya, Asanga Jayasooriya, Mohan Lal Piyadasa, T. Senthilvelavar, ‪Nalika Gunawardena‬ and W.P. Sewwandi.
