Misuse of stamp machines : Probe by Postal Dept.

14 Aug 2020

By Maheesha Mudugamuwa An investigation has been launched by the Department of Posts into the misuse of stamp machines by former members of the provincial councils (PCs), which has caused huge losses to the Department. Postmaster General Ranjith Ariyaratne said an internal investigation has been launched by the Department while a separate police investigation was also currently ongoing. He told The Morning that the Police investigation was being conducted by the Thalangama Police. “An internal investigation is currently being conducted to identify the stamp machines that have exceeded the free amount granted, the number of stamp machines issued by the Department, and the number of machines already handed over to the Department,” Ariyaratne said. As explained by the Postmaster General, the Department had incurred a loss due to the misuse of stamp machines given by the Government to the PC members, who had exceeded the amount they were eligible to use, having used it in excess by breaking the seal which was put by the Department. “We have given a certain limit and the machine is protected with a seal. But there are allegations that some have broken the seal put by the Department and used the machine, thereby exceeding the amount eligible to them,” he added.
