Mobitel launches experiential ‘Locomole’ app for tourists

10 Aug 2018

Singapore based LDR Technologies has collaborated with Mobitel to launch ‘Locomole’, a location based, customizable app to promote digital tourism in Sri Lanka. Locomole is the first experiential tourism app launched in Sri Lanka and is powered by Mobitel and guided by the Ministry of Tourism Development. In the initial stage, the service will cover Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Dambulla, Sigiriya and Colombo, which are four UNESCO world heritage sites. The service is expected to expand into different locations including the rest of the UNESCO world heritage sites and relatively unpopular tourist attractions before the end of next year. Locomole is designed in a way that provides information and guidance on the most pivotal tourist locations to make the Sri Lankan experience more authentic, allowing tourists to choose their own destinations. Locomole also contains features that suggest dining options and handicraft buying points that encourage local entrepreneurs. The app makes tourists interact more with the local community to make it a unique experience rather than having to depend on a tourist guide. For each location, Locomole shows points of interest, route, distance, its historical value, suggestions of what to do there and a game such as a quiz, photo challenge or augmented reality that allows the user to share their experience via social media. A report by Nielsen predicts that over the next 10 years, travel industry experts predict that the digital travel space worldwide will expand at an annual rate of 3.8% to reach US$11.4 trillion.
