Indictments were yesterday (18) handed over to MP and former Fisheries Minister Dr. Rajitha Senaratne and two other respondents who were previously charged with causing a loss to the State by leasing the Modara Fisheries Harbour in 2014.
Subsequently, Colombo High Court Judge Pradeep Hettiarachchi yesterday ordered the accused trio to be enlarged on bail on one count of surety bail of Rs. 1 million each.
This was when the case filed by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) was taken up yesterday. Dr. Senaratne, former Ceylon Fisheries Harbour Corporation (CFHC) Chairman Upali Liyanage, and former CFHC Managing Director Neil Ravindra Munasinghe were present in court yesterday.
The Judge also ordered their fingerprints to be recorded, while also calling for a report on their previous offences.
The court granted a request made by the attorneys for the accused trio for a date to make submissions on whether there were any shortcomings in the documents handed over to their clients by the CIABOC.
The Judge ordered the case to be taken up next on 22 April to ascertain whether the accused parties had received the relevant documentation properly.
The indictment filed against the trio contains five charges. These include that an alleged loss was caused to the State by the involvement of the CFHC Director Board in leasing the Modara Fisheries Harbour to the company Sea Gulf UK (Pvt.) Ltd. at a low cost, during the period between 1 August 2014, and 1 November 2014. The indictment filed by the CIABOC claims that the trio have thereby committed the offence of corruption under Section 70 of the Bribery Act. The indictment has listed 17 witnesses and 55 documents as court productions.
