By Mihi Perera Video footage was released today (21) of police officers including the Modara Police Officer In Charge attacking fishermen involved in a protest today due to the inability to fish, following the crisis of the X-Press Pearl. The fishermen stated that several policemen including the OIC had attacked those involved in the protest by dragging them away. It was also revealed that none of the fishermen had received any compensation for the inability to earn a living due to the X-Press Pearl disaster. The video footage showed that many fishermen had been unable to fish as the chemicals released to the oceans following the disaster of the X-Press Pearl had severely damaged their fishing nets, as well as killed many fish. "The government said they had received funds after this crisis but none of those funds have been given to us. They have told us that we will receive Rs. 5,000, but what can an entire family do with that sum of money? We are suffering here with no method to earn a living, and assets such as fishing nets which cost over Rs. 20,000 to make have been destroyed by this crisis," the fishermen said.
