The molnupiravir pill, introduced in some countries for the treatment of persons infected with Covid-19, is yet to receive approval from the National Medicines Regulatory Authority (NMRA), The Sunday Morning learnt.
Earlier last week, Sri Lanka’s Covid-19 Technical Committee granted approval for the use of molnupiravir, an antiviral medication that inhibits the replication of certain RNA viruses, to treat Covid-19 locally, with State Minister of Production, Supply, and Regulation of Pharmaceuticals Prof. Channa Jayasumana stating that a final decision on importing the drug would be made this week.
However, responding to a question, Public Health Services Deputy Director General (DDG) Dr. Hemantha Herath told The Sunday Morning that it is yet to receive approval from the NMRA.
Developed by Ridgeback Biotherapeutics and Merck Sharp and Dohme Corporation, molnupiravir works by interfering with the virus’ replication process. This prevents it from multiplying, keeping virus levels low in the body, and thereby reducing the severity of the disease. Based on clinical trial data, it is most effective when taken during the early stages of infection and has therefore been recommended for use soon after a positive Covid-19 test result and within five days of the onset of symptoms.
The UK Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) had authorised molnupiravir for use by people who have mild to moderate Covid-19 and at least one risk factor for developing severe illness, such as obesity, old age, diabetes mellitus, or heart disease.
