A Buddhist monk named Aluthwala Sumanarathana Thero who was residing in an elders’ home in Pamunugama, Uswetakeiyawa was assaulted to death yesterday (19), Police Spokesman DIG Ajith Rohana said.
The murder suspect is reportedly a 73-year-old male from Ja-Ela who also ailed from mental illnesses. During the incident, the suspect had allegedly assaulted the monk with a club.
The suspect was arrested and Pamunugama Police are conducting further investigations into the matter.
According to DIG Rohana, the elders’ home in question operates especially for elders who suffer from various mental illnesses and investigations are underway to ascertain whether the relevant criteria have been followed in maintaining such a nursing home and whether the registration has been obtained for it.
