By Randev Jayasinha Following the historic move by some parliamentarians last week to make their asset declarations public, more MPs are expected to follow suit in the following week. State Minister of Finance Eran Wickramaratne, and Parliamentarians M.A. Sumanthiran, Tharaka Balasuriya, Vidura Wickremanayake, and Vasudeva Nanayakkara made their asset declarations public at an event organised by Transparency International Sri Lanka (TISL) last week. State Minister of Highways and Road Development Ranjan Ramanayake later joined the list of MP’s to declare their assets and liabilities publicly through TISL. Nadim Majeed, an advocacy consultant for TISL, told The Sunday Morning that this was just the beginning and that later this week, more MP’s are expected to publicly declare their assets. “We hope this is just the first of many more parliamentarians to come forth and be transparent of their assets and liabilities. I cannot be 100% certain, but it is expected that two more parliamentarians are to (publicly) declare their assets by the end of this week. “It has only been a short period of time since the initial five members of Parliament voluntarily came forward to publish their declarations of assets and liabilities, but we expect a positive feedback nevertheless,” Majeed commented. He also stated that TISL is only an organisation that helps Sri Lankan legislators to be transparent and open with the public, but if they wished to go about it themselves, they have the freedom to do so.
