  • Station Masters allege import of balance compartments under Indian assistance
  • Over 100 already deemed unfit for operation
  • Railways Dept. incurs massive detention fees for non-clearance of 20 compartments at Colombo Port on 25 March
BY Buddhika Samaraweera Despite more than 100 train compartments previously imported to Sri Lanka under Indian assistance being shown to be unfit for operation, the rest of the said order of compartments have also been imported, claimed the Sri Lanka Railway Station Masters’ Union (SLRSMU). Speaking to The Morning, SLRSMU General Secretary Kasun Chamara said: “Earlier, more than 100 compartments had been imported from India but many of them are still left unused at the Maligawatta Railway Yard. However, the Railways Department has now decided to import another 40 similar compartments.”  He said that 20 out of the said 40 compartments have been brought into the Colombo Harbour on 21 March, while the remaining 20 compartments are due to arrive on 29 April.  Chamara further said that the Department should have taken action to clear the first 20 compartments from the Colombo Port on 25 March, but that so far, no action has been taken to clear those compartments. He added that due to this, the Department has to pay a large sum of money to the Port as detention fees. Railways General Manager Dhammika Jayasundara was not available for comment.  The SLRSMU recently emphasised that the Department should take action against officials responsible for the importation of 10 locomotives and 160 train compartments out of which more than 100 are not fit to be operational on the existing railways. Chamara, at that time, said that eight out of the 10 locomotives and more than 100 out of the 160 compartments that were imported from time to time since 2019, have now been abandoned on railway yards, which has caused billions of rupees of losses to the Department. He further said that a team of Department officials had left for India to inspect the said compartments before purchasing them. However, he said that the Sub-Department of Transport, which is a very important Sub-Department within the Railways Department in matters related to railway compartments, had not been consulted.
