A woman has been arrested in Nawaladi, Ariyala area in Jaffna today over the brutal assault on her nine month old infant, stated Police Spokesman DIG Ajith Rohana.
The Police had been made aware of the incident following the circulation of a video on social media where it was seen that the mother was brutally caning the infant.
The 24-year-old woman was arrested and the baby was taken into police custody for his future care.
It was also revealed that the woman had been employed previously in Kuwait and returned to Sri Lanka a month ago with the infant.
The Spokesman further stated that stern action would be taken against perpetrators of child abuse and assault, and action would also be taken against parents who do not interfere or aid such abuse.
