Motion against President to be discussed at next party leaders' meet to fix a date

17 May 2022

The motion of censure against President Gotabaya Rajapaksa that was moved by the opposition is to be taken up for discussion at the next parliamentary party leaders' meeting to fix a date for it to be taken up in the House, it is learnt. The push to suspend Standing Orders to enable the motion of censure to be taken up in parliament today (17) was defeated by the ruling party. The motion however is listed in the parliamentary Order Book and is to be discussed again by party leaders to decide on the date to take it up next. It is learnt that the opposition parties are moving to take up the motion during this week's parliamentary sessions.
