Motor accidents kill 936: Over 7,000 accidents in six months

Within the first six months of 2020, Sri Lanka has witnessed over 7,000 accidents islandwide, The Morning learnt. The Police Media Division, sharing statistics of motor accidents, said that between 1 January to 15 June, 2,278 grave motor accidents, 3,573 minor motor accidents, and 2,188 damage-causing accidents had occurred, with total motor accidents that caused fatalities accounting to 891 resulting 936 deaths. Between 1 January and 30 April, the total number of accidents caused by driving over the speed limit were 435, out of which 67 were fatal. During the same period, total accidents caused by drunk drivers were 274, out of which 19 ended up with fatalities. During the same period, the total number of drivers arrested for driving under the influence amounted to 14,942, while 15,778 drivers were arrested for driving over the speed limit. – Sarah Hannan
