MPs invited to Parliament for PCR tests

Members of Parliament (MPs) have been invited to undergo random PCR tests that will be conducted within the Parliament complex, said Serjeant-at-Arms Narendra Fernando. These PCR tests for the Parliamentary staff will be conducted once a week, and they will be carried out with the assistance of the Department of the Director General of Health Services. These PCR tests will be conducted on both sitting and non-sitting days, according to Fernando. Testing programmes have been conducted at the Parliamentary complex since 13 January. A total of 190 persons on whom tests were conducted on 25 January have tested negative. To date, several including Minister Vasudeva Nanayakkara, Health Minister Pavithra Wanniarachchi, MPs Rauf Hakeem and Wasantha Yapa Bandara, and State Minister Dayasiri Jayasekara, have tested positive for Covid-19. Moreover, several MPs were also instructed by the health authorities to self-quarantine after being identified as close contacts of Covid-19 patients.
